Freedom

A simple sketch of the Jewish people exiting Egypt, mitzrayim, with the walls of water on each side. The artwork is accompanied by an original poem save the last stanza which comes from a play from Janusz Korcak, the esteemed, loyal, and brave doctor and founder of a Warsaw orphanage during WWII.

Korcak famously walked to the waiting cattle cars with his 100s of charges singing, despite knowing their inevitable and cruel end. Treblinka was the last destination. The play was originally called ‘Masada’ but changed to ‘Fireflies’ for fear of authorities. The stanza is from a poem in the play that Korcak wrote and the children performed.

The entire piece pictured here was completed just before Pesach 2008.
